I spent my day today photographing with a group of women that were displaced to Kampala during the war. Now they work at a rock quarry breaking rocks for roughly a dollar a day. A quick portrait I made of one of the women and another from today.

World Cup with no electricity

With no electricity in Alebtong, a generator is used every night to power a tv to watch the World Cup. This was the Japan vs Denmark game, the first generator didn’t work, so a second one was brought in, which took about 45 minutes to fix. We got to see the last 14 minutes of the first half and then the rain came in and knocked out the signal.

On the move in Uganda!

Over the past two weeks in Uganda, I've been on the move rather a lot. From 5+ hour bus rides, super sketchy boda-boda's, over crowded cars (5 seater with 12 people in it), or really really hot taxi's that run out of gas in the middle of no where! I'm currently back in Kampala after only leaving here less than two weeks ago which meant an hour ride to Lira on the back George's motor bike this morning at 7am, then a 5 hour bus ride from Lira to Kampala. Here are some pictures from being on the move, including your's truly this morning on the back of the bike!

The amazing people over at Come Lets Dance made my transition into Uganda as simple as possible. I really want to thank them again for putting us up for two nights and showing us around Kampala.
our only full day with CLD was the last full day of three of their volunteers. I tagged along with them as they made a final visiti to their children's home to say goodbye (for now). As tradition has it, the kids get to drench the leaving volunteers and it turned into a mass water fight. Good times were to follow.

Thanks again guys for helping us out, you're such a blessing and I look forward to my time with you early next week!

In no order here are pictures from the last 2ish weeks I was in the states. Spent most of it in NYC where we got a crazy blizzard, got into a snowball fight in Central Park, met a new friend traveling to nyc for the first time in Central Park, watched the sunrise in Brooklyn from the roof....and then left for Uganda. I'll post more later but this took almost an hour to upload these pictures and i have to run. I'm currently in Lira in northern Uganda!

The Space Shuttle Endeavour took off last night at 4:14am from Cape Canaveral, Florida, roughly 100 miles away from my mothers driveway in Lakeland, Florida. That is where I watched it blast off into the early morning sky before disappearing out of sight after 6 minutes. It was awesome. (it's the ball of light above the house on the left side of the frame)

This picture is from the archives, a bit old but not that old.

Recently I've been thinking a lot about how I can separate myself from a situation I am in by using my camera to hide behind. I've realized that this act can be a healthy way to make pictures in hard situation but it can also be really unhealthy (to me). I have found in many conversations that making pictures and removing myself from the reality of the moment/conversations doesn't hit me until way later...way later. I don't know what my conclusion is to this or if there really is one but rather it's just something I have been thinking about. This week I've tried not to pick up my camera as much in those moments where I don't want to remove myself but be fully present. I'll see how it worked out when I go back into my RAW files a few months down the line. Should I have picked up my camera and made that picture in that hard conversations or should I have been 100% there? Only time will tell...

Preparing for the Appalachian Trail

Mike Marks and his girlfriend Lisa are currently hiking the Appalachian Trail (as of this morning, somewhere in NC just outside the Great Smoky Mountain National Park). Starting at the head of the trail in Georgia and walking to some point in Pennsylvania, at which point they will figure out if they want to go all the way or not. Lisa is keeping a blog that she will update from time to time, well town to town is more like it. You can check it out here! And you can literally follow them here via GPS's in their bags which they check in with once a day.

I spent their last night in Derwood with them before they drove to Georgia and I made some photos and some video. Lisa went to sleep before most of this happened, so here is Mike preparing for his journey. Oh, and now you can watch these video's here on the blog in HD! No more going to Vimeo for that!

The Rocky Mountain News will publish it's last paper tomorrow after 150 years. Today Rich Boehne, chief executive officer of Rocky-owner Scripps, told the newsroom at noon that tomorrow will be their edition. So many great shooters have come out of that paper and they have always had an amazing staff that produced so many epic photo stories.
